How Can Cosmetic Dentistry Improve Your Smile?

Are you afraid of smiling in front of friends and coworkers, just because you fear that you will expose your crooked and stained teeth in front of them, every time you smile? Do you want to have a perfect and beautiful smile? Then visiting a cosmetic dentist is the answer to all your dental worries. Cosmetic dentistry provides various procedures that are aimed at improving the facial aesthetics, as well as the appearance of dental structures, such as the teeth and gums.

Cosmetic Dental Procedures

Although this revolutionary field of dentistry is currently not considered as an accepted specialty of dentistry by the American Dental Association, still, becoming a cosmetic dentist demands years of clinical training as well as an “aesthetic eye” and an attention to detail. A cosmetic dentists are trained in providing the following aesthetic dental services:

  • Tooth Whitening – many people have stained teeth, which either result due to inadequate oral hygiene measures, such as regular brushing and flossing, or due to excessive consumption of tea, coffee and tobacco smoking. For these people, a cosmetic dentist applies a very safe agent on to the teeth, which results in dissolution of the stains, bringing about whiter and shinier teeth.
  • Veneers– veneers are pre-fabricated restorations, which are prepared in the laboratory after a dentist makes an impression of the tooth to be restored, and sends it to the lab for processing. These veneers are directly attached to the teeth using a suitable bonding agent, and are used for masking the effect of tooth staining, or restoring grossly carious or crooked teeth.
  • Dental Crowns – dental crowns serve as “tooth caps” and are sit directly on to the surface of prepared teeth. The dental crowns can either be fabricated purely in ceramic, or can be made by providing a sub-structure of a dental alloy over the ceramic. The cosmetic uses of dental crowns include restoration of tooth anatomy, covering a highly stained tooth, supporting a heavily filled tooth and strengthening a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment.
  • Bonding – tooth colored bonding agents can be used for filling excessive gaps between teeth, or restoring teeth after removal of tooth cavities. The surface where the filling is to be applied, is first etched using a mild acid, followed by placement of the bonding agent and polymerizing it using a suitable light source.
  • Cosmetic Gum Sculpting and Recontouring – some people either have excess enlargement or undergrowth of gums, both of which provide a highly unaesthetic facial appearance. For these people, appearance of the gums can be improved by re-attachment of the gums using lasers, or various surgical procedures.
  • Invisalign Orthodontic Aligners – many people were not happy with the unaesthetic metallic appearance of the dental braces, which were previously employed for providing orthodontic treatment. However, with the advancements in dentistry, virtually invisible clear aligners have been introduced, which are worn just like a retainer. These aligners not only disturb the facial aesthetics, but also prove equally effective in achieving tooth movement and alignment, when compared with the dental braces.

What is The Cost of Cosmetic Dental Procedures?

Due to the skill and intricacy required in performing them, cosmetic dental procedures are usually expensive. However, compared with the miraculous improvement achieved in facial aesthetics after undergoing these procedures, the benefits outweigh the risks and limitations.

How to Choose a Cosmetic Dentist?
